SUTHERLAND AVENUE
Year: 2001 The premises of this restaurant in Maida Vale, London, housed on the first floor of a characterless two-storey building from the fifties, were in need of a major overhaul. The Client’s ambition was to enliven the internal atmosphere and give a more prominent street presence. The design centres on the complete rearrangement of the layout at first floor combined with the extension onto a roof terrace located at first floor on a street corner. The extension consists of a glass and steel structure facing the street and acts both as a new vibrant and transparent bar area, and as prominent sign for the restaurant. The combination of effective artificial lighting, people and activity will contribute to establish this light box as a distinctive element of the streetscape and give a new identity to the restaurant. A new set of frameless glass doors, sheltered by a glass canopy and highlighted by a series of light boxes, form the proposed new entrance and establish a visual connection with the glass extension.
