PARK VILLAGE WEST

Year: 2003
Contract value:£250,000

The house, located on a small oasis off Albany Street in Regent’s Park, is part of a terrace of 3-storey houses in a crescent, with the Crown Estate as freeholder.

The client was originally planning to carry out a moderate amount of work to the property. However, after a number of initial meetings, the scope of the works was increased in order to take full advantage of the considerable potential of previously unexplored accommodation possibilities at lower ground floor.

The planning process was fairly straightforward as a result of precedents established by Belsize Architects elsewhere in the Regent’s Park Crown Estate.

At lower ground floor a new series of interconnected spaces was formed to accommodate family room, kitchen and dining room, leading to a new glass extension in the rear courtyard.Extension and courtyard were conceived spatially as a whole, with a structurally glazed wall as the only physical separation. The same stone is used as a floor finish both inside and outside the new extension to reaffirm the continuity between the spaces.Usage of water provides a focal point in the courtyard. The planting is minimal and the way the artificial lighting has been designed has added to the interplay between inside and outside space.

Light colour limestone and American black walnut played against white walls form a subdued palette of colours which complements the narrative of the spaces and creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
