NEW COUNTRY HOUSE IN HANDSMOOTH
near Wallingford, Oxfordshire Year: 2005 The client commissioned a proposal for a new country house in rural South Oxfordshire. The intention was to demolish the existing building and build a spectacular house to explore the remarkable location to the maximum-a site towards the summit of a hill with magnificent views to the front and sides and a charming wood behind. The living accommodation was to be at the upper level, which provides the best views and light, with the bedrooms at ground floor, partly sunken into the hill. A large void between the bedroom and living levels creates an outdoor living terrace for the summer. The accommodation volume above it, largely cantilevered, provides the necessary shelter. The entry level is at the level of the terrace, with an amoeba-like glazed enclosure enclosing the staircases to above and below. |
